Japanese voiceover guide

Checking kanji readings and politeness in Japanese text to speech

Japanese mixes kanji, hiragana and katakana with no spaces between words, and many kanji change their reading depending on the word around them. Common Japanese voiceover projects include YouTube narration, e-learning modules, product explainers and shop or event announcements.

Standard Japanese, based on Tokyo speech, is the usual choice for narration, while regional speech such as Kansai-ben uses different pitch patterns and wording. Pitch accent separates words like 箸 (chopsticks) and 橋 (bridge), and the politeness level, from plain form to keigo, changes how a voice comes across. Preview a voice on your own script, ideally a line with your key terms, before committing to it.

Three sentences to try in the preview

朝の駅は、いつもより静かでした。

In the morning, the station was quieter than usual.

Listen for: Listen for the soft, almost whispered し in でした, which standard Japanese usually devoices, and a short pause at the comma.

すみません、会議室はどこですか?

Excuse me, where is the meeting room?

Listen for: Check that the particle は is pronounced “wa”, not “ha”, and that the line ends with a natural question intonation on か.

今日は、明日の予定を確認しましょう。

Today, let's go over tomorrow's schedule.

Listen for: Check the kanji readings: 今日 should be きょう, and 明日 should be あした or the more formal あす.

Frequently asked questions

Many kanji have more than one reading, so preview names, place names and technical terms first. If a word is misread, write it in hiragana in your script or save a custom pronunciation in Listnr Studio, then regenerate only that block.

Use the polite です・ます form for training, customer-facing videos and announcements. Plain form suits casual vlogs, inner monologue and some fiction. Keep one style throughout a script and preview a few lines to check that the voice's tone matches it.

No. Japanese is normally written without spaces. Use 、 and 。 as you would in published text, since they show where pauses belong, then preview the passage and add pauses in Listnr Studio where a sentence needs more room.

Text to Speech converts written text into spoken audio. Listnr uses neural models to read punctuation, context, and pacing so the result sounds closer to a finished production take than a robotic readout.

Paste a script in Listnr Studio, choose a voice, optionally add style or pause cues, then generate. The model analyzes the text and produces natural-sounding speech you can preview and export.

Yes. You can adjust speaking rate, pitch, volume, and custom pauses. Many premium voices also support speaking styles such as newscast, cheerful, sad, or whispering, depending on the selected model.

Listnr is built for long-form work. Use script blocks or scenes for audiobooks, podcasts, and courses, then generate and revise section by section inside one project.

Yes. Assign a different voice or language to each block. That covers dialogue, interviews, and multilingual campaigns in a single studio project.
