Korean text to speech and the gap between Hangul spelling and sound

Korean is written in Hangul, with letters grouped into syllable blocks and spaces between words, and its spelling keeps each word's written form even where pronunciation changes, so 학교 (school) is said “hakkyo”. Korean voiceovers are used for YouTube videos, e-learning courses, app tutorials, ads and audiobooks.

Standard Korean, based on Seoul speech, is the usual choice for narration, while dialects such as Gyeongsang and Jeolla have their own intonation, endings and vocabulary. Speech level matters as much as accent: formal -습니다 endings suit announcements and news, polite -요 endings suit most videos and customer content, and plain forms suit narration and casual dialogue. Preview a voice on your own script to check that its tone fits the speech level you've written in.

Three sentences to try in the preview

오랜만에 친구들과 같이 바닷가를 걸었다.

For the first time in a long while, I walked along the beach with my friends.

Listen for: Check that 같이 is pronounced “gachi”, not “gati”: before 이, the final ㅌ turns into a “ch” sound that the spelling does not show.

회의는 몇 시에 시작하나요?

What time does the meeting start?

Listen for: Check that 시작하나요 sounds like “sijakanayo”, with the final ㄱ and the following ㅎ merging into a breathy k.

줄을 서서 차례를 기다려 주시기 바랍니다.

Please stand in line and wait for your turn.

Listen for: Listen for 바랍니다 pronounced “baramnida”: in the formal -ㅂ니다 ending, ㅂ becomes an m sound before ㄴ.

Korean text to speech

Frequently asked questions

Use the formal -습니다 style for announcements, news and corporate training, and the polite -요 style for most YouTube, app and customer-facing content. Plain and casual forms suit narration and dialogue between friends. Pick one level for each speaker, keep it consistent, and preview a few lines to check the tone.

Yes. Korean separates words with spaces, and a misplaced space can change the meaning, as in the classic 아버지가 방에 들어가신다 (Father goes into the room) and 아버지 가방에 들어가신다 (Father goes into the bag). Run a spelling and spacing check on your script, then preview it to make sure phrases break where you expect.

Korean has two sets of numbers: native Korean for hours and counting things, as in 세 시 (three o'clock), and Sino-Korean for minutes, dates and money, as in 삼 분 (three minutes). A digit does not show which set to use, so write the number out in Hangul where it matters and preview the line.

Text to Speech converts written text into spoken audio. Listnr uses neural models to read punctuation, context, and pacing so the result sounds closer to a finished production take than a robotic readout.

Paste a script in Listnr Studio, choose a voice, optionally add style or pause cues, then generate. The model analyzes the text and produces natural-sounding speech you can preview and export.

Yes. You can adjust speaking rate, pitch, volume, and custom pauses. Many premium voices also support speaking styles such as newscast, cheerful, sad, or whispering, depending on the selected model.

Listnr is built for long-form work. Use script blocks or scenes for audiobooks, podcasts, and courses, then generate and revise section by section inside one project.

Yes. Assign a different voice or language to each block. That covers dialogue, interviews, and multilingual campaigns in a single studio project.
