Amharic text to speech: ejectives the script shows, doubled consonants it doesn't
Amharic is written left to right in Ge'ez script, or fidel, where each character joins a consonant and a vowel, and doubled consonants are not marked even when they change a word's meaning. Amharic voiceovers are used for YouTube explainers, news-style updates, e-learning lessons, public announcements and audiobook-style stories.
Amharic is spoken across Ethiopia, and the speech of Addis Ababa is the usual reference for media, while regional varieties such as those of Gondar, Gojjam and Wollo differ in some words and pronunciation. Register matters too: news and official writing use formal Amharic, while YouTube videos and ads sound closer to everyday urban speech, often with English loanwords. Frequently asked questions
Amharic changes the word for “you” and the verb endings with gender and politeness, so a line addressed to a man (አንተ) differs from one addressed to a woman (አንቺ). For a general audience, many scripts use the plural እናንተ, while customer service and official messages often use the polite እርስዎ, as in እባክዎ (please). Keep one form throughout and preview a few lines to check the tone.
Amharic writing often shortens words with a slash or dots, such as ት/ቤት for ትምህርት ቤት (school) and ዶ/ር for ዶክተር (doctor). Write them out in full in a voiceover script so every word is read the way you intend, then preview the passage before generating.
Amharic script does not show gemination, so check names, technical terms and less common words closely in the preview. If a word sounds wrong, save a custom pronunciation for it in Listnr Studio and regenerate only that block.
