Chinese voiceover guide

Mandarin Chinese text to speech in Simplified characters: tones and tricky readings

This guide covers Mandarin written in Simplified characters, the standard in mainland China and Singapore, while Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use Traditional characters. Chinese is written without spaces between words, and some characters change their reading with meaning, such as 长 in 很长 (cháng, long) and 长大 (zhǎngdà, to grow up). Mandarin voiceovers are common for e-commerce product videos, short-video narration, e-learning courses and corporate training.

Standard Mandarin, based on Beijing pronunciation, is the usual choice for mainland audiences, while Mandarin in Taiwan and Singapore has its own rhythm and vocabulary, and many speakers there pronounce zh, ch and sh much like z, c and s. Cantonese is a separate spoken language rather than an accent of Mandarin, so a Mandarin voice is not a substitute for it. Preview a voice on your own script to check that its accent and tone suit your audience.

Three sentences to try in the preview

雨停了,街上的行人慢慢多了起来。

The rain stopped, and little by little more people appeared on the street.

Listen for: Listen for a short pause at the comma and for both 了 particles, which should sound light and unstressed in the neutral tone.

这个周末你有空一起去爬山吗?

Are you free to go hiking together this weekend?

Listen for: Listen for 一 in 一起, which changes from its dictionary first tone to a falling fourth tone here, yìqǐ.

请把重要的文件重新检查一遍。

Please check the important documents once more.

Listen for: Check that 重 is read zhòng in 重要 but chóng in 重新, since this character has two readings.

Chinese text to speech

Frequently asked questions

Use Simplified characters for mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia, and Traditional characters for readers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Converting between them is more than a character swap, because some everyday words differ, such as 视频 on the mainland and 影片 in Taiwan for video, so adapt the vocabulary and preview a short passage before generating the full voiceover.

Characters such as 行, 长 and 重 change their reading with the word, as in 银行 (yínháng, bank) and 行人 (xíngrén, pedestrian). Preview lines that contain them, along with names and technical terms; if one is misread, save a custom pronunciation in Listnr Studio or rephrase with a clearer word, then regenerate that block.

No. Cantonese, spoken in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, has its own pronunciation, tones and everyday vocabulary, and written Cantonese uses some characters of its own, such as 嘅 and 咗. Plan Cantonese content as a separate language from Mandarin, and preview any voice on a short passage before generating the full voiceover.

Text to Speech converts written text into spoken audio. Listnr uses neural models to read punctuation, context, and pacing so the result sounds closer to a finished production take than a robotic readout.

Paste a script in Listnr Studio, choose a voice, optionally add style or pause cues, then generate. The model analyzes the text and produces natural-sounding speech you can preview and export.

Yes. You can adjust speaking rate, pitch, volume, and custom pauses. Many premium voices also support speaking styles such as newscast, cheerful, sad, or whispering, depending on the selected model.

Listnr is built for long-form work. Use script blocks or scenes for audiobooks, podcasts, and courses, then generate and revise section by section inside one project.

Yes. Assign a different voice or language to each block. That covers dialogue, interviews, and multilingual campaigns in a single studio project.
